Curriculum

St Agnes Curriculum

Our aim is to provide a happy, secure atmosphere within which the children can develop intellectually, socially, creatively, spiritually and physically.  The Education Act requires schools to provide a basic curriculum, which includes Religious Education and the National Curriculum for pupils of compulsory school age.

The Curriculum is made up of the core subjects - (Literacy, Numeracy, ICT and Science) and six other subjects - (Design and Technology, History, Geography, Music, Art and P.E.)  This topic based Curriculum and R.E. together form the Basic Curriculum. In addition we also provide one lesson per week in a modern foreign language for children in upper KS2 and a weekly session for children in Year 3 and 4 and for children in Year 1 and 2. The children are taught the basic skills in each subject.

St. Agnes is organised into one Foundation Stage (Reception/Class 1), which caters for 15 pupils, and one KS1 (Class 2) which has 30 pupils in Years 1 and 2. KS2 is split into Y3/Y4 (Class 3) and Y5/Y6 (Class 4). A mixture of individual, class and group teaching is used to suit the needs of the children enabling them to develop as confident and independent learners.

All children on entry are given a baseline assessment during their first half term in school. They are currently assessed on their achievements in the National Curriculum core subjects of Literacy, Numeracy and Science in the school years in which they are 7 and 11. National up to date assessment results for the school can be found on the school website.

Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 Curriculum

Our programme of study includes the National Curriculum requirements (2014) together with all the planned activities that we organise in order to promote learning, personal growth and development. We continue to teach using a topic-based curriculum inclusive of enriching and varied activities that the school organises to improve the learning experience of our children. St Agnes’ curriculum also includes high expectations and consideration for personal, social, spiritual, moral and cultural learning as well as dedicated topics relating to British Values.

In literacy and numeracy we follow the 2014 National Curriculum as a guide for our planning although we do plan our lessons on a skills based and individualised learning basis.

In other curriculum areas such as Science, ICT or History we follow a skills based curriculum which follows the 2014 National Curriculum Programmes of Study and allows for progression throughout KS1 and KS2. These are planned on a two year cycle to accommodate the mixed aged classes.

In RE we follow the Manchester Diocesan Syllabus.

Our half termly Curriculum Information Sheets provide further details of our Curriculum.  Please see below.
