World War Two Recipes

Life changed dramatically for people during World War II. Rationing became part of daily life because of a shortage of some foods, such as eggs and sugar. Travel back to the war years with our tasty tea-time treats: recipes below.

Parsnip Whip - Importing foods into the UK became very difficult during the war as the ships were frequently attacked on their journey.  This made exotic foods like bananas very hard to find. This inventive recipe recreates mashed banana using parsnips and banana flavouring for a World War Two style tea-time treat.

Chocolate Cake - Rationing of basic foods meant that war time cooks had to be very creative to make dishes with limited ingredients. Each person had an allowance of just one egg a week, so they couldn’t be wasted in a cake!
